What Is Sodium Laureth Sulfate?
Sodium Laureth Sulfate, commonly abbreviated as SLES or AES, is the most widely used ethoxylated anionic surfactant in personal care industry. It is produced from renewable coconut derived lauryl alcohol via ethoxylation followed by sulfation and neutralization. Commercial cosmetic grade SLES-70 is pale yellow viscous paste with 68-72% active content.
SLES delivers powerful cleansing capacity together with abundant, rich and stable foam. Compared with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), the ethoxy chain modification greatly reduces skin and eye irritation. It features excellent salt thickening performance; system viscosity can be easily adjusted by adding sodium chloride. It is often compounded with amphoteric surfactants such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) to further lower irritation and optimize foam texture.
Different from non-ionic APG surfactants like Coco Glucoside / Decyl Glucoside, SLES is anionic primary surfactant with stronger degreasing and foaming power, cost effective for mass market cleansing products. Aogebio supplies high purity cosmetic grade SLES-70 in bulk, offering free samples, full qualification documents and global one stop shipping services for cosmetic manufacturers.
Core Advantages Of Our Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Cosmetic Grade Purified With Strict Impurity Control
Multi step vacuum stripping refining process, strictly controls 1,4-dioxane residual, low peculiar odor, stable active matter content, meets global cosmetic safety requirements for rinse off products.
Excellent High Volume Stable Foam Performance
Generates large volume, dense and creamy foam; foam keeps stable under hard water condition, brings rich foam sensory experience favored in shampoo and shower gel products.
Powerful Cleansing & Degreasing Capacity
Effectively remove sebum, dirt, sweat residue and styling product deposits from skin and hair; suitable for formulas requiring strong cleaning performance.
Easy Salt Thickening Characteristic
Shows obvious viscosity building response with sodium chloride addition, simplifies formula thickening work, reduces dependence on expensive polymer thickeners.
Good Surfactant Compatibility
Highly compatible with amphoteric, non-ionic surfactants and common humectants; perfect match with CAPB, glycerin, panthenol for diversified cleansing formula development.
Good Hard Water Tolerance
Maintain stable foaming and cleansing performance under hard water environment, finished products are less affected by tap-water mineral ions.
Stable Batch Quality & Flexible Supply
Consistent batch-to-batch active content, foam performance and physical-chemical indicators, fit for large-scale industrial production; support sample testing, small-batch trial order and large-volume bulk customization.
How Sodium Laureth Sulfate Works In Cosmetic Formulations
SLES molecules consist of lipophilic lauryl alkyl tail and negatively charged hydrophilic sulfate head-group. In aqueous cleansing system, surfactant molecules assemble at oil-water interface to form micelle structures, wrapping sebum, dirt and particulate contaminants, which get rinsed away with water flow.
When compounded with amphoteric surfactants such as CAPB, mixed micelles are formed, which weaken the aggressive effect of pure anionic surfactant on skin keratin protein, significantly lowering skin eye irritation. Adding sodium chloride changes micelle aggregation state to raise system viscosity, achieving desired thickening effect.
SLES is designed exclusively for rinse-off applications. Long time skin contact under high concentration may cause lipid over-stripping and dry-tight feeling. Avoid extreme strong acid long term environment which may trigger ester-bond hydrolysis and performance decline.
Main Functions & Cosmetic Application Fields
Core Functional Benefits
- • Primary cleansing agent: Efficiently remove sebum, dirt and residual styling product from skin and hair
- • High volume foaming agent: Produce abundant, dense, stable foam even under hard water conditions
- • Viscosity buildable surfactant: Realize thickening effect by sodium chloride salt addition
- • Co-surfactant: Compound with amphoteric surfactants to balance cleansing power and mildness
- • Wetting & dispersing capacity: Improve dirt lifting performance for rinse off cleansing base
Suitable Cosmetic Formulas
- • Daily shampoo, 2-in-1 shampoo, anti-dandruff hair care shampoo
- • Body wash, shower gel, bubble bath, liquid hand washing soap
- • Foaming facial cleanser (non-sensitive skin oriented cleansing formula)
- • Pet shampoo and household mild detergent raw-material base
- • Multiple rinse off daily chemical cleansing formulations
Formulation Guide: Dosage, Solubility & Matching Tips
Recommended dosage:
- -Shampoo & hair care cleansing product: 5%-15%
- -Body wash & shower gel: 4%-12%
- -Foaming facial cleanser: 3%-8%
- -Hand-wash liquid & bubble bath: 4%-10%
Solubility: Fully soluble in water phase; insoluble in oil phase, add into water phase under stirring during production.
Recommended matching ingredients: Cocamidopropyl Betaine(CAPB), Cocamide DEA, glycerin, panthenol, sodium chloride (viscosity adjuster), citric acid (pH adjuster).
Formulation Notes:
- -Suggested finished product pH range: 5.5-7.5; use citric acid to adjust pH, avoid long term pH below 4.5 to prevent hydrolysis.
- -Salt thickening: Add sodium chloride gradually in small portions, test viscosity step-by-step; excessive salt will lead to formula turbidity or phase separation.
- -Best compound ratio reference: SLES : CAPB = 2:1 ~ 3:1 to balance foam, cleansing power and mildness.
- -Processing temperature should not exceed 80℃; avoid prolonged high temperature heating to prevent color deepening and performance degradation.
- -Mainly for rinse-off formulas; not recommended for leave-on cosmetic products.
- -Seal and store under cool dry condition; low temperature environment may turn viscous, re-warm and stir evenly before use without performance loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Q1: What is the difference between SLES and SLS?
A: Both belong to anionic sulfate surfactants. SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) has ethoxy groups in molecular chain, lower skin-eye irritation. SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) without ethoxylation possesses stronger degreasing power but significantly higher irritation. SLES is the mainstream choice for modern daily use rinse-off cleansing products. -
Q2: What is the difference between SLES and Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB)?
-
Q3: Why does my SLES-containing formula turn turbid after adding salt?
-
Q4: What is your minimum order quantity and sample policy?
