What Is Decyl Glucoside?
Decyl Glucoside belongs to the alkyl polyglucoside (APG) non-ionic surfactant family. It is synthesized via green condensation reaction between renewable plant source decyl (C10) fatty alcohol and glucose extracted from corn starch. The commercial raw material is a pale yellow viscous liquid with 50-55% active content.
It is well known for extremely low skin and eye irritation, excellent solubilizing capacity, and good wetting performance. It delivers light, clean rinse off feel without heavy residual film on skin or hair. How Decyl Glucoside Works In Cosmetic Formulations
Decyl Glucoside molecules are composed of lipophilic C10 decyl alcohol tail and hydrophilic glucose sugar head group. In aqueous cleansing systems, surfactant molecules assemble at oil-water interfaces to form micelles, wrapping sebum, dirt and particulate impurities, which are washed away together during rinsing process.
Thanks to its non-ionic characteristic, it will not strongly bind with skin keratin protein, greatly reducing tight-dry post-wash sensation caused by harsh anionic surfactants. When compounded with CAPB, coco glucoside or other surfactants, mixed micelles are formed to further reduce overall formula irritation and optimize foam texture.
Note: raw Decyl Glucoside liquid is strongly alkaline. Finished cleansing product must be pH adjusted down to skin friendly 4.5-6.5 range by citric acid or lactic acid. It cannot be thickened by sodium chloride salt, requiring polymer thickeners for viscosity building.
