What Is Coco Glucoside?
Coco Glucoside belongs to the alkyl polyglucoside (APG) non-ionic surfactant family. It is synthesized by green chemistry condensation reaction between renewable coconut fatty alcohols and plant source glucose (mainly from corn starch). At room temperature it is pale yellow viscous liquid with 50-55% active matter.
It features ultra low skin and eye irritation, produces soft creamy foam, and does not over strip skin’s natural lipid barrier. Fully biodegradable, it is a core surfactant for clean beauty, natural organic and infant safe cleansing products.
Different from anionic surfactants such as SLES and amphoteric CAPB, coco glucoside is non-charged. How Coco Glucoside Works In Cosmetic Formulations
Coco Glucoside molecules possess lipophilic coconut fatty alkyl tail and hydrophilic glucose head group. In aqueous cleansing systems, surfactant molecules gather at oil water interfaces, wrapping sebum, dirt and particulate contaminants. Dirt is taken away during rinsing process.
Because of its non-ionic property, it will not strongly interact with skin keratin proteins, so it avoids the tight-dry post wash feeling caused by strong anionic surfactants. When compounded with CAPB, SLES or other surfactants, mixed micelles are formed, which further reduce overall formula irritation and optimize foam texture.
Note: raw coco glucoside liquid is strongly alkaline. Finished cleansing product must be pH adjusted down to skin friendly 4.5-6.5 range by citric acid or lactic acid before use; it cannot be thickened by sodium chloride, requiring polymer thickeners such as xanthan gum or HEC for viscosity building.
