What Is Cetearyl Alcohol?
Cetearyl Alcohol is a high-purity plant-derived fatty alcohol mixture blended from cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol, widely applied as multi-functional cosmetic raw material. Unlike drying short-chain alcohols, it belongs to non-irritating long-chain fatty alcohol, delivering thickening, co-emulsifying, emulsion-stabilizing and skin-hair conditioning performance at the same time.
When heated and melted in oil phase, it can build stable internal structure for O/W and W/O emulsion systems, improve product viscosity, bring silky creamy touch without greasy residue. It can fill lipid gaps in skin stratum corneum, reduce transepidermal water loss, soften skin and smooth hair cuticles. It is highly compatible with plant butters, various primary emulsifiers and cosmetic active ingredients. Aogubio supplies bulk high-quality cosmetic-grade Cetearyl Alcohol, providing free samples, complete qualification documents and global one-stop shipping for cosmetic manufacturers.
Different from single cetyl alcohol or stearyl alcohol, this balanced C16/C18 composite blend owns moderate melting property, better formula adaptability, less grit risk, suitable for diversified lotion-cream and hair-care systems.
Core Advantages Of Our Cetearyl Alcohol
High-Purity Refined & Uniform Particle
Adopts multi-step physical refining process, low impurity, faint mild waxy odor, uniform flake or pellet shape. Fully melts without granular residue, effectively avoids gritty finished product texture, fits premium cosmetic production.
Multi-Function In One Raw Material
Realizes thickening, co-emulsification, emulsion stabilization and emollient conditioning all-in-one. Reinforce emulsion freeze-thaw stability, reduce risk of oil-water delamination, cut the usage amount of extra thickening agents in formulas.
Non-Drying & Mild Compatibility
Long-chain vegetable-sourced fatty alcohol, non-drying to skin barrier, low-irritation feature. Safe for sensitive-skin cream, baby skincare and gentle hair-care formulations; compatible with non-ionic, anionic and cationic cosmetic raw materials.
Optimize Sensory Experience
Greatly improve spreadability of creams and lotions, create rich creamy skin feel, prevent finished lotion from being too thin or overly sticky. For hair formulas, it softens hair strands, reduces frizz and enhances combability.
Broad pH & Formula Adaptability
Stable within cosmetic common pH range 4.0-9.0, maintains stable performance with plant extracts, vitamins, preservatives and natural plant butters. Works for emulsion system as well as anhydrous solid cosmetics such as lipstick and balm base.
Stable Batch Quality & Flexible Supply
Strict batch-to-batch consistency, meets requirements for large-scale industrial production. Support sample testing, small-batch trial order and large-volume bulk customization.
How Cetearyl Alcohol Works In Formulation
Cetearyl Alcohol must be fully molten within oil phase under heating condition. In emulsion formulas, it inserts into oil-water interfacial film together with primary emulsifier to reinforce emulsion structure, restrain droplet aggregation and phase separation during long-term storage.
When applied to skin, its fatty-alcohol molecules merge into stratum corneum lipid matrix, replenish skin surface lipid deficiency, lower moisture evaporation, relieve dry tight feeling and soften rough keratin. When added into hair-care conditioners and hair masks, it adheres to hair cuticle surface, smooth raised cuticles, decrease hair tangling and frizz, improving hair softness and luster.
Main Functions & Cosmetic Application Fields

Formulation Guide: Dosage, Solubility & Matching Tips
Recommended dosage: 1%-10% of total formula weight; 1-3% for light lotion for mild thickening & stabilization; 3-6% for standard face & body cream; 6-10% for rich cream and intensive hair-care formula.
Solubility: Oil-soluble wax-like solid, must be completely melted in oil phase at 60℃-75℃ before emulsification; cannot dissolve in cold water.
Recommended matching ingredients: Perfectly compatible with mango butter, shea butter, emulsified wax, jojoba oil, squalane, vitamin E, panthenol, glycerin and common cosmetic preservatives.
Formulation Notes:
- Heating temperature should not exceed 80℃ to avoid discoloration and performance decline.
- Ensure full melting in oil phase; incomplete melting will cause gritty grain texture which cannot be repaired after homogenization.
- Keep proper stirring speed during emulsification, slow cooling after homogenization for uniform finished texture.
- Seal and store in cool dry environment, avoid high-temperature caking and moisture absorption.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Q1: Is Cetearyl Alcohol the same as drying short-chain alcohol (ethanol)?
A: Definitely different. Cetearyl Alcohol is long-chain plant-sourced fatty alcohol, non-volatile and non-drying. It softens skin and stabilizes formula instead of stripping skin moisture, safe for skincare application. -
Q2: What is the difference between Cetearyl Alcohol and Emulsified Wax?
-
Q3: Can Cetearyl Alcohol be used in anhydrous formulas such as lip balm?
